Y-90

What is Yttrium-90 DOTA-Octreotate treatment?

Yttrium-90 DOTA-Octreotate also known as Y-90 is a radioactive substance that can be added to a carrier called DOTA- Octreotate. Once in your body, the Y-90 DOTA- Octreotate attaches well to certain receptors (called somatostatin-receptors) which are almost exclusively found on neuroendocrine tumours. The radioactive Y-90 then destroys these cancerous cells.

This treatment is known to be effective in gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) neuroendocrine tumours such as:

  • Intestinal carcinoids
  • Tumours of the pancreas
  • Bronchial carcinoids

This treatment is also used for other slow growing tumours such as:

  • Paraganglioma
  • Phaeochromocytoma
  • Carotid body tumours
  • Medullary thyroid cancer
  • Thymic tumours

The team looking after you at The WELLNET Unit will consist of neuroendocrine tumour doctors, nurse specialists and a nuclear medicine team.
